Scientists have at last identified the culprit responsible for chronic rejection of heart, lung and kidney transplants. The findings suggest new therapeutic approaches for preventing transplant rejection and sabotaging cancer growth. University of California - Los Angeles researchers focused on the mechanism behind narrowing of the donor's grafted blood vessels, which blocks blood from reaching the transplanted organ. Starved of oxygen and other nutrients, the organ eventually fails, forcing the patient back on the transplant waiting list. "Chronic rejection is the No. 1 cause of organ failure in the first year of transplant," explained Elaine Reed, director of the UCLA Immunogenetics Center. "In the first five years, some 40 percent of organs fail after transplant due to blockage of the grafted blood vessels. Currently, we have no way to treat this deadly condition," Reed said. In this study, Reed and her colleagues looked at how human leukocyte antigens HLA molecules on donor tissue provoke an immune response in the patient. he scientists discovered that HLA's ability to stimulate cell growth and movement depends upon a quid pro quo relationship with another molecule called integrin beta 4.

"The donation rate in Sweden has been among the lowest in Europe for a number of years. Thus, the Swedish government realised the need for a national agency, with an overall responsibility for donation. Sweden had 14,2 donors per million people in 2005 and 15,1 p.m.p. in 2006. Thus, Sweden moves in the right direction, but there is room for continuous improvement, especially keeping in mind that Sweden has over 600 patients waiting to be transplanted."

Swedish researchers have moved a step closer to performing the world's first womb transplant, providing women unable to have children an alternative to adoption.

"The researchers at Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg made a breakthrough in the summer when they successfully transplanted a womb from one rat to another, reported the Sydsvenskan daily.Several rats were involved in the trials and were later able to become pregnant."It went well. They had offspring which so far seem perfectly normal," said researcher Liza Johansson to the newspaper.The method could offer women unable to conceive an added alternative to adoption, as surrogate motherhood remains illegal in Sweden.The Swedish researchers, who are led by Professor Mats Brännström, have come furthest in the world when it comes to this type of procedure, following the successful animal tests."The baboons are hopefully the final step before we move over to clinical tests on humans," said Liza Johannesson to Sydsvenskan, adding that the team hopes to be able to make the procedure a reality within two years.The researchers estimate that there could be up to 10,000 women in Scandinavia who could stand to benefit from the transplants."

A Biosynthetic Alternative to Human Donor Tissue for Inducing Corneal Regeneration: 24-Month Follow-Up of a Phase 1 Clinical Study

"Corneas from human donors are used to replace damaged tissue and treat corneal blindness, but there is a severe worldwide shortage of donor corneas. We conducted a phase 1 clinical study in which biosynthetic mimics of corneal extracellular matrix were implanted to replace the pathologic anterior cornea of 10 patients who had significant vision loss, with the aim of facilitating endogenous tissue regeneration without the use of human donor tissue. The biosynthetic implants remained stably integrated and avascular for 24 months after surgery, without the need for long-term use of the steroid immunosuppression that is required for traditional allotransplantation. Corneal reepithelialization occurred in all patients, although a delay in epithelial closure as a result of the overlying retaining sutures led to early, localized implant thinning and fibrosis in some patients. The tear film was restored, and stromal cells were recruited into the implant in all patients. Nerve regeneration was also observed and touch sensitivity was restored, both to an equal or to a greater degree than is seen with human donor tissue. Vision at 24 months improved from preoperative values in six patients. "Heart transplants might no longer be executed in Stockholm. According to a central decision today, they will only take place in Gothenburg and Lund. The decision gets a lot of criticism from local Stockholm politicians today.

Stockholm county writes in a press release that the decision might have serious consequences also for other transplant activities and research in the most populated region of Sweden. They also write that Karolinska university hospital treats patients from large parts of Northern and central Sweden, patients who have a much longer way to travel if they need to go to Gothenburg. Karolinska university hospital will for the time being continue with their hart transplant activity since they believe the decision will soon be changed." People who donate a kidney don't need to worry about living shorter lives because of it. The 80,000 Americans who have donated a kidney since 1994 had a mortality rate equal—and sometimes better than—that of the general population, researchers found. They believe donors may sometimes live a little longer than others because they tend to take better care of themselves after giving up a kidney.

There was a slightly higher risk of death in the 90 days after surgery, in which 25 donors died, but mortality rates leveled out after that. Some 6,000 Americans became live kidney donors last year, the Los Angeles Times notes. "It is incumbent on the transplantation community to show that these lives are not saved at the cost of placing the donors at risk," the lead researcher wrote. Animal organ transplants in humans are now a step closer to reality: Scientists have successfully combined animal lungs with human blood, keeping a pig lung alive and functioning as the blood flowed through it. “The blood went into the lungs without oxygen and came out with oxygen, which is the exact function of the lungs," a researcher tells the Daily Telegraph. The first pig-human transplant could happen within five years.

Previous attempts to combine pig lungs with human blood had failed because the blood formed clots. The scientists overcame this problem by removing a section of pig DNA and adding human DNA to the pigs as they were reared. A medical ethicist who objected to this process said, “It is basically a human-pig, a hybrid. ... It is about whether the community is prepared to accept a part human, part animal."

Organ donation helps mom cope with her son's murder

Syracuse, N.Y. Antonia Cherry takes solace in knowing that her son, who was murdered last year, lives on through four people. Her 28-year-old son, Jamar Ellis, was shot in the head May 25 outside her home in the 100 block of West Matson Avenue in Syracuse. He died four days later. Cherry donated his organs. Knowing that his heart, lungs and kidneys are benefiting others “ ... is what gets me through the day,” Cherry said.
“If you don’t become a donor, two peoples’ lives will be gone,” she said. “Your loved one and somebody else.”

Cherry spoke at a news conference organized by Upstate University Hospital officials to draw attention to the growing need for kidneys and encourage people to register as donors. Upstate has a record 241 people on its kidney transplant wait list. The average wait for a kidney is about three years. Some people die waiting.
“It is our sacred privilege to care for organ donors,” said Dr. Amy Friedman, Upstate’s director of transplantation services. “They are giving more than can be imagined, life itself.”

Lars-Erik Gelin (1920 – 1980) was professor of General Surgery and Transplantation Surgery at Gothenburg University and the director of dept. of
Surgery I, Sahlgrenska Hospital.
Prof. Gelin initiated 1965 the renal transplant program at the Sahlgrenska Hospital which during the 1970’s under his leadership expanded successfully both clinically as well as scientifically to become one of the worlds’ largest renal transplant units.

Transplant of pig organs into humans closer after stem cell breakthrough.

Scientists in China have successfully reprogrammed pig skin and bone marrow cells into an embryo-like state with the potential to form every type of body tissue. The achievement promises to provide a tool for breeding pigs that are genetically engineered to carry human immune system proteins so that their organs are less likely to be rejected for transplant. It also raises the possibility of modifying pigs to resist infections such as swine flu, and to grow pig tissues and organs as models for human diseases.

Kidney from a donor of a different blood type?
Until now, a transplant patient could only receive an organ from someone of the same blood type*. For example, a recipient with blood type A could only receive a kidney from a donor with an A blood type. An organ from a different blood group would be perceived as foreign and vulnerable to attack by the recipient's natural antibodies. Now, through a process of immune conditioning, a recipient is able to receive a kidney from a donor of a different blood type. This new procedure is currently being provided at a limited number of transplant centers.

Artificial blood veins? In theory the new device could help millions of people who suffer from peripheral arterial disease.The particular condition develops when fatty material builds up, and begins to narrow the blood vessels.This clog of the blood vessels can lead to a heart attack, stroke or the need for limb amputation. Synthetic grafts have been developed for use in operations to bypass clogged blood vessels in the past. The main difference is that many get clogged with the fatty deposits themselves, and often fail within two years. As a result, surgeons tend to rely on taking blood vessels from elsewhere in the patient's body to do the job. The new synthetic vein is an improved attempt to succeed where others have failed. Today is World Water Day
Over the last two decades, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle and other big beverage companies have spent untold millions of dollars making us afraid of tap water. They've told us that if we want to be sure what we drink is pure and clean-not to mention hip and fashionable-we should buy bottled water.
Unfortunately, it worked.

In the United States alone, we consume approximately 500,000,000 bottles of water each week. Imagine that: while 1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water worldwide, other people spend billions of dollars on a bottled product that's no cleaner, harms people and the environment and costs up to 2,000 times the price of tap water.

But there's good news: Last year, for the first time in a long time, bottled water sales fell-not that much, but they went down. Consumers who want economy, portability and convenience are switching to refillable metal bottles. Restaurants are proudly serving tap water. And cities, states, companies and schools around the world are ditching the bottle to save money and do their part for the environment.

Still, we've got a ways to go.

Steve Jobs push for a new law

PALO ALTO, CA (KGO) -- Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a surprise appearance Friday to push for a new law to get more people to be organ donors. Jobs is about to celebrate the one-year anniversary of his own liver transplant, and he's hoping to help save other lives too.
There are more than 21,000 Californians waiting for organ transplants right now. Sadly, many will die before they can find a donor.
"I was almost one of the ones that did wait for a liver in California last year, I was receiving great care here at Stanford, but there were simply not enough livers in California to go around," Jobs said.
Jobs flew to Tennessee to get his liver transplant. Now he's pushing for a bill to get more people to volunteer as organ donors here in California.
"It will simply require the DMV to ask you if you would like to be an organ donor," Jobs said
